On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me...a book that was a Christmas-inspired mystery! (The Twelve Books of Christmas by Kate Carlisle, to be precise.)

I'm one of those people who could read a holiday-themed book at any time of the year, but when December rolls around, I am in the mood to read about decorated trees and twinkling lights. So when I saw this one at my local bookshop, I wanted to give it a try. And while I am normally a stickler for reading a series in order, in this case it would be "A Bibliophile Mystery" series, this time I broke my own rule 😮 and decided to read this without having any prior knowledge from the others in the series.

So here goes with my review...

A Little Bit About the Book:

Book-restoration expert, Brooklyn, and her security expert husband, Derek, are called to a castle in Scotland by her friend Claire…who is about to be married to the Laird of the castle. Brooklyn and Derek are all set to be their witnesses for the big day, along with all of the locals it seems. Before their arrival, twelve rare books disappeared from the family’s library, and our main character takes on the challenge, with her friend's permission, to find them.

As she gets antsy in her search to find the missing books, strange noises in the night, coupled with a few bothersome villagers, and a mysterious librarian, add to the eerie atmosphere of the castle. But it doesn’t turn nasty until one dead body causes some major bumps in the road to her investigation, and threatens her friend’s upcoming nuptials. Now it is up to Brooklyn and her husband to ensure the safety of her friend, and save the village’s event of the year, before everything spirals out of control.

My Thoughts on the Book:

A Scottish castle and vanishing books were enough to hook my interest in the beginning, and although I found the story to be rather enjoyable, it was evident to me that the author likes to write romance as well; which is alright, just not my cup of tea. At the end of the book…don’t worry, as I won’t give any spoilers…it was fun, and whereas I guessed part of the mystery, I did not see the twist coming.

According to the book, this is Kate Carlisle’s first Christmas mystery within her “A Bibliophile Mystery” series, and hopefully it won’t be her last.
