Longer Bio:
Sheryl C.D. Ickes was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where she currently resides
with her family and their dog. Drawing on over two decades of cake decorating experience and
driving cross country throughout the United States, Sheryl decided to turn her real-life tales into
fictional mysteries where a few deaths may or may not be based on some true inspirations. From
visiting almost every state on eighteen wheels, to creating a three-dimensional cake to travel over
pothole-filled roads, there is no shortage of material for her to use within her mystery novels!
Learning how to drive a tractor trailer, or rig, at the age of eighteen, Sheryl knew she wanted to
follow in her family’s footsteps as a teenager. With two generations of mechanics in the blood,
before her young brother decided to take it up as well, there was no convincing her otherwise
after graduating from college with a degree in accounting. When readers pick up Death of a
Dispatcher, they can expect to hear from the voice of someone who has worked in the
profession, all the while learning terms that may be new with an illustrated diagram featuring the
different parts of a truck. Now, with all that being said, Sheryl doesn’t over-burden the story as if
it were a classroom textbook. Finding the balance between pioneering into an unexplored world
inside the cozy mystery genre, and keeping the readers engaged through a captivating narrative,
is what she does best.
As for her “Slice of Life Mysteries,” Sheryl was a self-taught cake-decorator for a number of
years and has been employed to create wonderful designs in both regular and ice cream cakes.
Just like how her main heroine, Alexandra Jean Applecake, owns a cake and supply shop, she
also had the opportunity to be the proprietor of the place she was employed at, before ultimately
declining; because while running a business sounds splendid on paper, she wouldn’t have had
time to write between work and home. When readers begin to journey into the town of Creek
Water, Pennsylvania, they soon discover that piping out frosting on baked goods can be fun, but
it also can turn deadly as well in It Only Takes One Bite.
At the moment, she has three novels and two novellas in her “Slice of Life Mystery” series, one
novel in her “Becky and Rufus Cross Country Mystery” series, and a first installment in her
“Fairies of Creek Water,” for younger readers. With three of her books being either winners or
finalists in the Cozy Mystery category, it’s no wonder why people keep asking her for more.
