When I was able to pick up this ARC copy of Lucy Connelly's latest release, I did not want to pass up on an opportunity like that! I had this sitting on my shelf for a few weeks, as I was currently in the midst of reading the novels in her "Mercy McCarthy" series (more reviews to come on those) and finished this one the other day!
It was truly a blast to read the first in her "A Welsh Village Mystery" series and...well, I can't give it all away just yet. 🤣
After a lifetime of working as a news reporter and managing a newspaper in Texas, Dr. Gwen Griffith takes up a new profession as the head of the journalism department at a university in Dillynaidd Wales, where she also studied many moons ago. However, when Dr. Alice Rice, a tenured professor who was not liked by just about everyone, dies literally on Gwen’s doorstep, she finds herself already in the thick of it from the very beginning.
Gwen ultimately decides that she has to figure out the how and the why, leaning into her beloved past life as an investigative reporter, since not only do the local police think she may be guilty, but her instincts demand it. Throughout her snooping, she meets a great group of characters as they attempt to call out the culprit before a possibly fatal misstep allows the guilty party to get away scot-free.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor! Lucy Connelly did a great job taking Dr. Gwen Griffith from America into Wales, and I believe this book should be read by every reader who enjoys a fun cozy. I am definitely on the lookout for the next "A Welsh Village Mystery" as the adventures continue for Gwen.
A Little Side Note: I was "curious" as to the Welsh biscuits which were referred to in the storyline and had to chuckle when I learned that they are extremely similar to the Welsh cookies I like to make around Christmas! Click here to check out the recipe I have listed on my website.
