Sue Henry is one of my favorite mystery authors; not just due to her stories taking place in Alaska, but also because their is a sense of authenticity one gets from her books. So when my daughter found this copy at a library book sale, I was delighted to join back in on the adventures with Jessie Arnold and the gang (having not kept up with the series from life's interventions).

*Warning: These books are not always the easiest to find, as they are older and the author has since passed away.

Jessie Arnold's trip to Five Finger Lighthouse, to help friends make renovations, turns into an unexpected situation of life or death. After finding a dead body, the group discovers that their communication with the rest of the world has been destroyed, alongside their only means to leave the island. As Jessie realizes that there is a killer amongst them, she tries to finger out the guilty culprit before anyone else dies. When she fails to keep in touch with her male friend Alex, who happens to be a state trooper, he comes to investigate in the hopes that his gut feeling is wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed and remember Sue Henry’s first book in the series, Murder on the Iditarod Trail. And although Murder at Five Finger Light is the eleventh book in her "Jessie Arnold" mystery series, I don’t believe reading this series in order is a must when it comes to understanding the storyline. As I read the book, I didn’t feel like there were any “missing pieces” as the mystery progressed, since the author did a great job in keeping the reader “filled in” on the back history of the characters.

Sue Henry effectively employed red herrings and wove in a great twist at the end, all of which made this a delightful read! She also included detailed descriptions of the Alaskan setting to invite the reader to “see” and “feel” the land from the perspective of one who respects both the beauty this state has to offer, as well as its dangers. I look forward to not only reading more of this series, but will be in the market to investigate her other series, "Maxie and Stretch." (I have already started the first one, The Serpents Trail 😃)
