Murder in the One Percent is a fun traditional-style mystery to read, filled with red herrings planted amongst the twists and turns in this enjoyable novel.
Old friends, all part of America’s top one percent of the wealthiest people, have gathered together, over a weekend, to celebrate the sixty-fifth birthday of one of their own, John E. Campbell. Before the party glasses have been put away, Preston Phillips, ex-Secretary of the Treasury and known ladies man, is found dead. Almost everyone attending had a reason to kill him, and Detective Parrot, a smart and likable fellow, is tasked with finding out who killed one of the nation’s most powerful people. With influential and important connections, such as an ex-president for example, he is pressured into finding the killer quickly if wants to keep the FBI at bay. But will the murder weapon, and motive, stump the Detective and force him to surrender the case?
I appreciated the use of what I consider to be a unique poison; one disturbingly easy to obtain, and one that a lot of people who own certain aquariums probably do not even know exists, much to their own detriment.
Throughout the story, Detective Parrot learns that though rich and influential people can hide behind lawyers, they are not really that much different than those less rich. Because whether we wear imported satin sewn in designer clothing, or shirts from the thrift store, different levels of society are all plagued by the same issues of greed, hate, insecurity, and jealousy.
The author, Saralyn Richard, kept the story moving and placed enough red herrings to keep the reader guessing. I ended up not fingering out the culprit, and found the final twist at the end to be a nice addition. This book is one I would certainly recommend and I'm looking forward to reading the next Detective Parrot Mystery: A Palette for Love and Murder.
