DIY Hot Air Balloon Craft Example

Example of Holly's Childhood Ornament.

In Tough Fluff, my characters talk about how the ornaments that decorate a Christmas tree can symbolize different experiences from our lives. To Holly, co-owner of Fluff and Flowers, there is one ornament that stands out in her memory, because she created it with her grandmother.

If you would like to make the ornament in the above photograph, just like Holly did when she was younger, keep on scrolling to see what all went into this up-cycled Christmas craft.

Disclaimer: I am not held responsible for any damages to yourself, or any object in your house, should you decide to give this craft a try. This is just a suggestion, nothing more.

Instructions:

  1. Cut the outline of a hot air balloon from a thin piece of cardboard. The outer edge should be no more than four inches by three inches.

  1. Now, cut the inside of the balloon out, leaving half an inch to three quarters of an inch all the way around. Color it black and let dry.

  1. Take a single piece of tissue paper and glue it on the back side of the cardboard frame. Cut off the extra, and repeat another layer. Let dry.

  1. For the basket, create an origami cup out of thin paper. Consult an origami book or video for help (or use a stapler to make one).

  1. Punch a hole on opposite sides of the basket, along with two matching holes on the balloon frame. Use string to tie the basket and balloon together, knotting it behind each hole on the back side. (Don’t forget to put a wish in the basket for safe keeping!)

All Done!

Balloon design optional. Place it in front of a light on your tree!
