Kirsten Weiss writes laugh-out-loud, page-turning mysteries, and now a Tarot guidebook that’s a work of experimental fiction. Her heroes and heroines aren’t perfect, but they’re smart, they struggle, and they succeed. What is your ultimate goal as an author?

I want to write good and true things that entertain and inspire readers.

What is your favorite food to eat?

Chocolate. To my cost, I am a sugar addict, and I’m really trying to break free.

Do you have a writing schedule, or do you write whenever you can squeeze it in?

Writing is my full-time job, so I’m all about schedules! I write a chapter first thing every weekday, then turn to editing. My afternoons are spent marketing, which is, alas, a critical part of being an author—at least if you want readers to know your books exist.

Who is your favorite mystery sleuth? (Books, TV, amateur and professional alike)

My first book love was Nancy Drew, so I guess I have to say Nancy, though I became obsessed with Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot not long after.

Do you prefer pen and paper, or computer for writing?

I learned to type when I was quite young, so I’m all about the computer. I wish my handwriting were better, and am considering buying one of those old copybooks to make it so. That’s how bad my writing is. On the plus side, I’m the only one who can decipher my scribbles, so I’ve basically created my own secret code. For a mystery writer, it works.

How much is based on real life versus made up?

It’s hard to parse that out. The storylines and people are made up, yet real life weaves its way through every chapter. Weird events. Funny things people said to me. Frustrations and challenges. Real life is the subtext for everything I write.
